Australia’s Nature Positive Plan
Australia’s Nature Positive Plan is an umbrella name that represents the government’s commitment to reform Australia’s environmental protection laws to better protect and manage the environment. It is split into three parts;
Nature Repair Market - For many years, protecting the environment requires more money than even the government has at its disposal. Therefore, this market uses private sector money to restore the environment by giving farmers and landowners real financial incentive to look after their own land. But, there is a lot of scepticism in its effectiveness; there is little to no evidence that this sort of market works.
Environmental Protection Australia agency/Environment Information Australia - The creation of these two bodies will help manage development assessments, compliance and enforcement of environmental regulations and support decision making by reporting on key environmental targets.
Law Reform - This is the most significant change. By making environmental standards legally enforceable, this brings it to the forefront of the minds of the people who really stand to make a difference.
This plan hopes to combat uncertainty and obscure objectives, inconsistency with other laws and a lack of real action taking place to save the environment. In 2024, the government has commenced setting real, certain target dates for each stage with the Nature Positive (Environmental Protection Australia) Bill 2024.
